As a teen librarian, offering reading recommendations for high school students is the biggest – and best! – part of my job. With summer rapidly approaching and the pandemic giving a lot of people cabin fever, I figured I’d put together a book list of recommendations for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This particular post is for twelfth graders.

This list was created through an alchemy involving age of the protagonists, themes, genre, tone, complexity, reader skill/comfortability level, events a student would likely encounter in their studies that year, and books they were unlikely to read for school. I also tried to pick materials that published in the last decade, with preference going to #ownvoices and/or marginalized authors.

Summer vacation is fast approaching, and for school librarians that means it’s time to start planning our summer reading recommendations. So I thought I’d share my list of suggested fiction and comics/graphic novels for 2019.

This list was created through an alchemy involving age of the protagonists, themes or events a student would likely encounter in their studies that year, books they were unlikely to read for school, and subject matter. I also tried to pick books and comics that were written as YA (with a few exceptions) and published in the last decade, with preference going to #ownvoices and/or marginalized authors. Obviously there are way more books for older teens than younger ones; you can thank publishers who rarely print fiction with 14-year-old protagonists for that dearth.
